He is in his early fifties, his name is Shekhar Pathak, and he lives somewhere in the Himalaya — somewhere, but we do not know exactly where. For he is a gumakkad, a traveller and seeker who lives for and loves our beautiful hills — its people, its cultures, its rivers, its threatened landscape. Sometimes Shekhar Pathak is in the upper reaches of the Alakananda valley, tracing the ancient routes of the Bhotiya herders who once traded across the Himalaya with Tibet. 21वीं शताब्दी में प्रवेश कर चुके भारत में आजादी के 57 साल बाद भी गरीबी हटाओ, भारत उदय, इण्डिया शाइनिंग जैसे दिवा स्वप्न के बीच आगे बढ़ रहे जनतंत्र में ग्रामीण भारत आज भी अपने मौलिक अधिकारों से कितना वंचित है यह हकीकत सामने रखते हैं नवोदित हिमालयी राज्य उत्तरांचल के अधिसंख्य दूरस्थ दुर्गम अंचल। 2187 मीटर की ऊँचाई पर बसे बागेश्वर जिले के समडर, बोरबलड़ा, भरणकाण्डे जैसे गाँव 21वीं सदी में भी आदम जीवन जीने को विवश हैं। समडर गाँव के हुकुम सिंह रुधो गले से अभी कुछ वर्ष पूर्व की एक घटना बयान करते हैं कि नन्दा देवी के मेले से लौटते हुए शम्भू नदी पर बनाये गये लट्ठे के पुल के टूट जाने से उनके गाँव की दो गर्भवती महिलाएँ तथा एक आठ वर्ष की बच्ची और वह स्वयं नदी में गिर गये थे। बच्ची को वह अपनी छाती में चिपकाये काफी दूर तक बहते चले गये और अन्ततः वह बच्ची उनके हाथ से छूट गयी और इस तरह तीनों कैसे काल का ग्रास बने। आधे से ज्यादा गाँव पूरी रात नदी की दूसरी तरु जंगल में बैठा रहा। साहब यह सब तो शम्भू नदी में आम बात है। हम कैसे अपने बच्चों को पढ़ायें, कैसे इतने दूर भेजें न जाने कब नदी चढ़ जाय, कब भालू हमला कर दे।

The Abhiyan of 2004 passed through 16 alpine pastures, 20 Kharaks (high altitude cattle sheds), 15 zones and 3 valleys affected by earthquake and landslide, 8 initial regions of Chipko movement, 15 Chattees (ancient pilgrimage camping sites) which are now in ruining state, 5 Himalayan pilgrimage routes, 5 tribal zones and 3 regions of Indo-Tibetan trade activities.
